Austin’s Mama K & The Shades Take On SXSW
One thing that never gets old, in my opinion, is the undeniable power of funk. Whenever you need a little pick-me-up or jaunt off your normal musical path, the wide world of funk always seems to brighten spirits and expand the imagination. One band that has caught my attention during these last few dismal days of winter, is Mama K & the Shades. Hailing from the sun-soaked Lone Star State, Mama K and her groovy band are bringing those heartwarming funk vibes to SXSW.
Mama K & The Shades is an 11-piece band from Austin, TX. Combining the styles of funk, soul, R&B, jazz, and more to bring you a one-of-a-kind party experience. Forming in the summer of 2014, Mama K & the Shades quickly caught the attention of the local funk and party scene. Bringing high energy and funky grooves to their live performances that are sure to get your booty shakin’!
Mama K & The Shades is a perfect example of Austin’s effervescent music scene. The blend of lead woman Kelsey Garcia’s incredible voice along with the dynamic instrumentation of vocalist Willie Barnes, guitarist Johnny Storbeck, keyboardist David Thacker, bassist Lee Braverman, drummer Chris Barnes, percussionist Wesley Gonzales, trumpeter & flugelhornist Joseph Morrow, tenor and baritone sax player Dustin Hunter, and trombone player Donald McDaniel. With so may masterful cooks stirring this pot of musical gumbo it’s no wonder that Mama K & The Shades have garnered so much attention in their hometown.
In November of 2016, the band released their latest album, Honey Made, to considerable critical acclaim. Dripping with the sticky, gooey goodness of soul, funk, and jazz, Honey Made is a record that you can really get down to. Check out Honey Made below and be sure to catch Mama K & The Shades at Maggie Mae’s Rooftop on Mar 15, 2017 from 1–1:50 a.m. and at Half Step on March 18, 2017 from 1–1:50 a.m., during SXSW.
