MHSM Makes Waves with Mile High Meltdown Series vol. 4
Since it’s bold entrance in Colorado circa 2007, artist collective The Mile High Sound Movement and it’s affiliated label MHSM Records has shed light on a vastly broad spectrum of electronic dance music from well-known Colorado natives to up-and-coming international talent. The facts are in the name, as this is indubitably a musical movement of the masses – a journey that has taken the cities of this colorful state by storm, stopping at nothing to satisfy it’s supporters with the freshest tunes on the streets.
The fourth volume of MHSM’s Mile High Meltdown Series embodies the unique character of Colorado’s dance music scene, perfectly portraying the energy of this unadulterated culture and exposing the edgy underground sound from various producers across the country and beyond. Year after year, the MHSM team works restlessly to compose a compilation of all original tunes from it’s associated artists, but this time around they decided to switch things up a bit. For the first time ever, a public contest was hosted during which producers submitted an original track in hopes of scoring a spot in volume four of the series – a series that gains momentum with every iteration. With over fifty entries across four countries, the contest was wildly successful, but at the end of the day decisions had to be made. Among the lucky winners were Colorado-based Cat Party and Dozier, and Atlanta-based Pure Colors, showcasing styles from the funky homeland to the dirty south and everything in between – proving MHSM a powerhouse for all genres of electronic music.
Every track within this collection takes the listener on a journey through time and bass, starting off strong with one of MHSM’s newest additions, Cat Party. This masterpiece is aptly named “G.O.L.D”, and after one listen it becomes apparent that the production level is indeed rich with excellence – setting a precedent for the subsequent creations. Sultry piano gradually builds with hip-hop elements and a funky, electro vibe; this number delves into a raw and gritty rendition of bass music, but maintains clean to the core in deliverance. Each song takes us further down the rabbit hole as we ricochet from varying stylistic approaches, enriching us with new creative perspective and appreciation as the next tune comes on. “Maharaja” is a majestic, mesmerizing tune by Colorado creative Dozier, with a certain tribal bass essence and rumbling, bellowing wobbles throughout. The compilation keeps you on your toes with more upbeat BPMs brought to you by names like Dynohunter with their track “Footprints” – containing energetic synths rooted deeply in techno and house that’s sure to leave your ‘prints all over the dance floor.
Songs like kLL sMTH x Digital Connection’s “Gristle Queen” and Kruza Kid and DMVU‘s “Nights Like This” ft. Brisco Jones take us oldschool hip-hop heads down memory lane, courtesy of the scratching elements heard throughout. A vast amount of samples are incorporated throughout the entirety of the compilation, pulling from all different eras and genres, showing the capability of this collective to resonate with music lovers of every corner.
MHSM front men Unlimited Gravity and ProJect Aspect are featured within the composition per usual, adding fire to the flame, which is standard of these notorious Mile High members. UG brings his signature stimulating sound with “Awakening”, a top-heavy dubstep track with neck-breaking drops and plenty of grime for the hardcores. ProJect Aspect takes us on a charged journey with the groovy bass melodies in “Heat Seaters”, but we’d expect nothing less of this local legend. PA also recently slayed a guest mix for Pretty Lights’ The HOT Sh*t radio series, which you can check out here, as well as another edition from fellow MHSM mate Unfold.
The Mile High Sound Movement is no stranger to the festival scene and have been an integral part of Sonic Bloom’s lineup since for quite some time, a relationship that continues to flourish in 2018. Seven MHSM artists will be taking over the Unified Field throughout the weekend of June 14-17 at Hummingbird Ranch in Spanish Peaks Country, CO. If you’re a bass lover of any kind, this is one party you’re not gonna want to miss. Kruza Kid, Lucid Vision, Mass Relay, ProJect Aspect, Ryan Viser, Unfold, and Unlimited Gravity will be in attendance this year, so secure your tickets soon.
