Moonlight Frights: Detention of the Dead
Very few zombie-related media impress me. I’m not a fan of The Walking Dead, Shaun of the Dead, Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse and recently, Resident Evil seems to have lost all of its appeal as it changed from survival horror to a more action adventure that simply isn’t in my interests. If you asked me what undead shows and films I’ve enjoyed, I’d be happy to list them for. Z Nation gets its comedic b horror timing just right, Warm Bodies has its odd placing in my cold heart and yes, even Detention of the Dead is bearable. This week, the latter is our choice flick and it provides a few well-placed laughs.
Self-aware of its horror status, six students arrive in detention for various reasons. There’s our nerd, Eddie; cheerleader, Janet; stoner/skater (and my personal heartthrob), Ash; goth chick, Willow; and jocks, Brad and Jimmy, the former of whom is dating Janet. Also in detention is another student whose name is irrelevant. As Eddie discusses his punishment with Mrs. Rumblethorp, Ash is attempting to pass off regular medicine as drugs to Mark — whose name came up on Wiki. During this deal, Mark falls over in pain and everyone scrambles to help. Rumblethorp approaches Mark and is attacked by him; Mark takes a huge chunk out of her neck and the group discovers the school has turned into chaos.
The rest of the film is spent surviving the onslaught in a library as they plot their escape. With imminent doom lurking around every corner, it’s safe to say the school will be shut down due to poor test scores, troubling students and the occasional zombie attack. With this ragtag of not-friends, I’d consider becoming a zombie because they seem to get on your nerves. Except Ash — he provides laughter throughout with his painfully undead puns. It’s also worth noting that the occasional glimpse of zombies chewing down on limbs and organs is nauseating, at least for me.
