Music at MAYfest: Dar Williams
Local Cold Spring, NY resident Dar Williams is a celebrated singer and songwriter. Her fans have long admired her sweet yet haunting voice and poignant songwriting. MAYfest is proud to welcome Williams to the festival this year to share more than 20 years of beautiful and relatable songs.
Williams began her music career in 1990, with the release of her first album, I Have No History. She steadily gained a devoted fanbase by touring New England coffee shops. With the release of her 1994 album The Honesty Room, Williams gained national attention. She went on to record and tour with renowned American folk artists such as Joan Baez and John Prine. Williams released the beloved Mortal City in 1996. She recently wrapped a national “Return to the Mortal City” tour to celebrate the 20th anniversary of this fan favorite.

Most recently, Williams released Emerald in 2015. Emerald was crowdsourced, via PledgeMusic, and therefore allowed fans a unique opportunity to become involved in the recording process. With this album, Williams continues her journey as one of America’s greatest singer songwriters. She also continues her streak of recruiting excellent musical collaborators, like, in this case, Richard Thompson and Jill Sobule. In this new album Williams’ sound moves beyond folk to country and pop. However, long time fans will find a lot to love in Emerald, including its closing track “New York is a Harbor,” which celebrates New York City, immigrants, and the working class.
Since the start of her career, Williams’ lyrics have reflected her passion for activism. Over the years she has tackled issues such as environmentalism, LGBT rights, and the financial crisis.
Williams is performing on the main stage of MAYfest on Friday, May 26th at 9:30 PM. For tickets and more information, please visit: mayfestny.com
