Mysteryland Wedding: An Interview with the Bride
This past weekend, Mysteryland was full of amazing, fairytale-like experiences. However, the biggest fairytale of them all must have been the real Mysteryland Wedding. Jessie and Steve Arthur were scheduled to marry in the Holy Grounds camping area on Friday, May 23 at 8pm (just in time for sunset!) but foul weather forced them to reschedule (because no one wants to get married outside in the pouring rain with thunder and lightning!). By pure serendipity, I was able to catch the entirety of Jess & Steve’s wedding, which happened around 1:30pm on Saturday, May 24, at the very start of the inaugural Mysteryland USA festival, in front of the Love Chapel on the hallowed Woodstock festival grounds. There was inevitably a series of (now that its over we can say this) comical events that only a wedding at a festival can have: the beautiful and elaborate cake that was being brought up by someone in the Facebook forum broke en route; because of the location change, the 500+ people hoping to attend could not due to lengthy security lines; and at the last minute (literally 12 hours before the ceremony) a chaplain had to be found through the Facebook forum to officiate the wedding. Nevertheless, the ceremony was absolutely beautiful and the weather was perfect. The Love Chapel was quite the suitable and festive locale and I’m glad they were able to make that change at the last minute!
Because we knew they’d be making sweet, sweet love after their ceremony (it took place at the Love Chapel after all!)/raging really, really hard (hello, this is Mysteryland after all!), we made sure to catch up with them before the ceremony. I grabbed Jessie just before she said, “I do,” and the chaplain declared them “Mr. & Mrs. Mysteryland” (seriously, he did):
Sensible Reason: How did you guys meet?
Jessie Arthur: We met through mutual friends originally. We were both dating other people. Then in 2011 we both split from our ex’s and found each other on Facebook… I messaged him first. He loves telling people that!
SR: How did you decided to get married at Mysteryland?
Jessie: We originally planned on getting married in September with Tomorroworld as our honeymoon. Until we found Mysteryland and said, “Wouldn’t it be amazing to get married at Mysteryland?!” So we posted on their Facebook page, “Weddings?” They commented on the post with their email and said if you’re serious, drop us a line. So I did, and they said they were super excited about the idea. We exchanged numerous emails. They came up with the idea to bring the Love Chapel.
SR: What is it about Mysteryland that made you want to get married there instead of any other festival or in another location? What is it that is unique or special to you both that made you want to tie the knot in this very different wedding spot?
Jessie: Location. It’s the original site of Woodstock. How awesome is that?!
SR: Will friends and family be attending the wedding?
Jessie: Yes, we have 4 friends from our home town standing in the wedding, and about 20 people from the Buffalo Rage Community (BRC is a group of people from Buffalo that go to shows together. They’re awesome).
SR: The Facebook community has really gotten excited around your wedding! What has been the most awesome/inspiring/cool thing someone from this community has said or done after learning about your wedding through FB?
Jessie: There so many people who have reached out and offered to help in any way possible. We have someone from NC making us a cake, someone is making us shirts for after the wedding, bracelets, wedding kandi, a frame, pins. We are so amazed by all of the love we’ve been shown by strangers. It’s life changing. Lifelong friends have been created through this FB community. (Jaime,Will, we’re talking to you!)
Jessie: Music. People. Great vibes. There’s so much going on this weekend I don’t think there is anything not to look forward to.
SR: Really quick final question: are you guys camping, or did you go all out for this ‘honeymoon’ and get one of those fancy rental tents or bed & breakfasts?
Jessie: We love being outdoors, so we naturally chose camping. We opted for the Holy Ground camping where we can meet new people and create lasting friendships. VIP is no fun without your friends!
Major congratulations to Jessie & Steve Arthur! We’re so glad that despite a few hiccups this wedding weathered the storm– and we know it’s a sign that this is no fair-weather relationship! Not only is it amazing to see that people are so in love with Mysteryland that they want to be married at it, but it’s also amazing to see the community that came together around the wedding to support Jessie & Steve– total strangers that, through the Mysteryland Facebook forum, were able to connect and support each other in this true testament of live-long love and commitment. And that’s really what festivals are all about, aren’t they? Love, friendship, and honest moments of humanity that bring together tens of thousands of people. And still, 45 years later, we haven’t changed a bit.
According to Jessie, “We were told that we are the first and only wedding that will ever be held by them. So we made history!” And as they say at Mysteryland, “Yesterday is history. Today is a gift. Tomorrow is a Mystery.” Congratulations again Jessie & Steve: may you cherish every day for the gift it is and always be looking forward to that next mystery(land).
