New Character Names Get Old School Reveal for Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Fans of the Star Wars films got a bonus this week with the release of exclusive collectible trading cards that reveal the names of key characters in The Force Awakens. The cards, inspired by the iconic Topps trading card company, were mocked up by director and co-writer J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilms president Kathleen Kennedy and reference the five sets of color-coded cards Topps released for the original 1977 film.
Each card is numbered and includes a picture and a brief descriptive detail about the character. Abrams has, of course, been careful not to divulge too much information about the film, but he has admitted that the numbers are significant (tantalizing!).
We now know that Oscar Isaac plays a Stormtrooper named Poe Dameron, John Boyega’s character is named Finn, and Daisy Ridley is playing a character named Rey. The alleged new Sith Lord, who appeared in the trailer as a dark, Lightsaber-wielding figure, is named Kylo Ren.Most importantly, we now have a name for the adorable rolling droid who has already wormed its way into our collective hearts and minds: BB-8.
The characters (and associated numbers and details) are:
#11: BB-8 on the move!
#53: Poe Dameron on his X-Wing
#67: Kylo Ren ignites his Lightsaber!
#74: Rey on her Speeder
#76: Finn on the run!
#81: Stormtroopers prepare for battle!
#88: X-Wings in formation!
#96: The Millennium Falcon
No news yet on whether additional trading cards will be produced, but there were 5 color-coded sets designed for the original film, so it’s safe to assume that more are on the way. We may soon see cards for the characters played by Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Max von Sydow, Adam Driver, and Domhnall Gleeson, as well as for members of the original cast who will be returning to reprise their roles. The film is still over a year away, scheduled for release on December 18, 2015. In the meantime, pick up your collectors’ trading cards and get swapping.
