NFL Sues M.I.A. for $16.6 Million Dollars
It’s been two years since M.I.A. stuck her middle finger up while performing alongside Madonna at the Super Bowl Halftime Show in 2012. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the NFL has sued the rapper $1.5 million dollars for breach of contract. Now, they’re adding $15.1 million to that, claiming it as “restitution” for “the alleged value of public exposure she received by appearing for an approximately two minute segment during Madonna’s performance” (The Hollywood Reporter). Representatives for the rapper argued that the NFL is intending to bully for challenging the league.
Legal papers from the star argue that Michael Jackson was going to grab his genitals during his 1993 halftime show, with the NFL being aware of what Jackson was planning. Prince also managed a feat of “caressing the neck of his stylized guitar…as if stroking an erect oversized phallus in a manner reminiscent to Jimi Hendrix” during his 2007 halftime show, and again the NFL were fully aware of this yet said nothing. Even superstar Madonna’s name was thrown into the mix, suggesting that some of the dancers were probably not even of “adult age” to be in some lewd positions. The controversial lawsuit also mentions the use of the N-word said by a linebacker, with a proposal of a 15 yard penalty being introduced.
Last year, the singer originally claimed her gesture was a “display of female empowerment” before stating it is, in fact, a spiritual gesture towards Matangi, a Hindu goddess. Before dropping the mic, the legal documents also suggest that NBC is to blame, failing to have enacted the 5 second delay; whether the NFL has contacted the corporation is unknown.
