Night Bass Brings the Sound of the Underground to Electric Forest
Seeping out from the underground is a new and exciting wave of electronic music. Originally a monthly party in Los Angeles, “Night Bass” has been steadily making its name heard as it is now a record label and holds curated events at festivals and venues around the country. Bass boss AC Slater has been leading the charge since 2014 and has been blowing up ever since. The Night Bass sound circles around UK Garage, Bassline, Grime, and House that blends together to produce bass heavy dance music.
At this year’s Electric Forest Music Festival, Night Bass will curate the Forest Stage Saturday night of the event. Electric Forest has always been good at enlisting new, fresh talent and will host additional curated events throughout the weekend including All Good Records, Anjunadeep, Bassrush and Soul Clap’s House of Funk in addition to the Night Bass collective. Electric Forest has stacked its lineup this year with names like The String Cheese Incident, Bassnectar, and STS9, but the Night Bass showcase is going to be a memorable deep forest dance party.
Using deep, dark basslines and heavily influenced by UK Garage and House, Taiki Nulight has molded those influences into a superb form of Bass House. This London producer had a breakthrough year in 2014 with highly acclaimed remixes and collaborations and has not looked back. Since then, Taiki Nulight has released a number of EP’s and been a growing name in the Bass House genre.
Born on the East Coast before relocating to Los Angeles, Petey Clicks brings a crisp and upbeat spice to the Night Bass table. After releasing music through various collaborations and aliases, Petey Clicks started to gain momentum in 2014 and has been perfecting his unique spin on Bass House ever since. Gaining respect from the likes of 12th Planet, Gorgon City and Tchami, it’s clear that Clicks is on the rise.
Bristol’s underground heroes bring their wide ranging bass sound to this year’s festival. Bringing influences from house, bass, and techno, Kry Wolf brings top notch production skills to the dance floor. The duo has certainly made a name for themselves in the UK as heads of essential house labels Sounds of Sumo and FOOD Music and plan to make an impression in the Forest.
This fresh faced DJ started making music at a young age while playing drums as a child. Now, the 18-year-old bass prodigy has created a sound all his own. With a forward Tech House approach to the Night Bass sound, Landis Lapace draws inspiration from everywhere. Don’t be surprised to find elements of funk, soul, and tropical nuances throughout his bass kicks.
Utilizing Youtube and Soundcloud to his full advantage, Low Steppa blew up the internet with his bootleg of Route 94’s “My Love” in 2013 and has been turning heads ever since. Elements of vintage UK garage and feel good house combine in way that keeps dance floors stepping and has earned Low Steppa a DJ residency on Rinse FM. Much of his music has been released on his own label, Simma Black, and Low Steppa is proving to be a force in the house music arena.
This LA native has been leading the Night Bass charge not only in America but around the world as well. Since 2008, AC Slater has been pumping out his underground sound that fuses house music with dirty UK garage and a bit of breakbeat. Undeniably danceable and completely original, AC Slater transformed Night Bass into a full-fledged movement. As the mastermind behind the record label, club residency, global tour, curated events, and attitude that is Night Bass, AC Slater’s set will no doubt be a high point of the weekend.
The only female producer featured during the Night Bass curation, Flava D is a UK house wonder woman. Her music acts as a meeting point for House, UK Garage, and Grime. The London blonde’s versatile, high-energy sound has made her a core member of the Butterz record label and her mixes are featured weekly on Kiss Fresh radio show. Having already made her name known in the overseas underground, expect Flava D to absolutely blow up the states and the Forest.
This quirky, pizza-loving producer brings his inimitable sound to the Night Bass collective. Co-Founder of the California-based House label, Dirtybird, Martin’s sound and influence has granted him two sets at this year’s festival. Having just released his second full length album, “Hello Clouds,” earlier this year, Justin Martin has been tearing up dancefloors with his addicting bass-fueled bounce.
Birmingham based banger Chris Lorenzo is widely credited for playing a major role in the formation of the Bass House genre. Lorenzo has also been the leader for the emergent sound in the States as well. since he’s a prolific and well-respected producer, remixer, and DJ, you don’t want to miss the opportunity to see a rising legend in dance music as he closes the Forest Stage out with a classic Saturday night dance party.
