Openers Announced for Snarky Puppy’s Tampa Stop
Every January the biggest party on the sea, Jam Cruise, sets sail out of South Florida for a week of around the clock funk. While the price of admission for a spot on the boat keeps many fans stuck on land, Floridians get the benefit of catching all of the pre-cruise action when Jam Cruise acts make their last tour stops before their departure.
One pre-cruise show that Tampa, FL can look forward to is Snarky Puppy’s stop at The Ritz Ybor. The 18 piece jazz/funk/world/soul/pop collective delivers a world class live show whether they are playing in a smoky bar or on an international festival stage. Their dynamic compositions, delivered with expert musicianship, have attracted fans and critical acclaim from all over the world. Snarky Puppy’s 2015 collaboration with the Metropole Orkest, Sylva, was recently nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, and they are set to release their tenth album, Family Dinner Vol. 2, in February 2016.
Snarky Puppy has hand picked world fusion group Banda Magda, led by Greek-born singer and accordionist Magda Giannikou, to open up the night. Snarky Puppy fans will recognize Magda and her accordion from the Family Dinner Vol. 1 album where she joined the band on her dreamy original “Amour, t’es là.” Expect Banda Magda to put on an energetic show filled with Latin and Greek dance rhythms, jazz improvisation and samba beats.
To round out the night, Tampa locals Serotonic will be kicking things off with a pre-party show in the side room of the venue. The five piece jazz/funk group have been making a name for themselves around Florida, opening for national acts such as The Motet and, most recently, Cory Henry and the Funk Apostles.
