Outside Lands Track of the Week – Whethan “Be Like You” feat. Broods
Young artists have a drive to them that is distinctly different than their veteran counterparts. Some call it naivety, but we call it vision. Whethan is a young artist native to Chicago. His age doesn’t mean much when it comes to his music, for he is fully developed in his creative field. This guy has a vision we can’t deny. He’s been touring the country and plans to hit San Francisco’s Outside Lands Festival in August. This week’s Track of the Week is his latest single, “Be Like You” feat. Broods.
Starting off sounding a bit sinister, the first few sounds in “Be Like You” set the tone for the rest of the track. The angelic voice of Georgia Nott of Broods enters quickly just as the chorus does. The structure of the track is outside the boundaries of an ordinary electronic song. The build and drop have been replaced by vocals and a bass track we can’t shake. The beat in the chorus hits the listener hard with its deep bass and slow driving beat. The collaboration between Broods and Whethan come alive as both front and back vocals tell a story. As the track breaks down, it gives the listener a softer side. Yet this soft side doesn’t last long as the beat once again enters and tears the listener away from the daydream Nott has created. Whethan plays with the vocals throughout the track, sampling and warping them in flawless fashion. As the song comes to a quick end, it feels almost unfinished and demands a repeat.
The lineup for Outside Lands is unbelievable. Boasting headliners The Weeknd, Florence & the Machine, Janet Jackson, Future, Beck, Odesza and more, this festival’s diversity stands out.
