PHB TOTD: Random Rab featuring Birdseye – “Wake of the Storm”
The countdown to Purple Hatters Ball continues to dwindle, and roughly five short weeks stand between upcoming festival goers and epic amounts of live music. Being immersed in the effortlessly beautiful nature of Suwannee sets the perfect stage for San Francisco based one-man band Random Rab, whose psychedelic and ambient style of music coincides with a fresh outdoor environment.
Random Rab’s music explores a plethora of genres, and has been classified under anything from liquid sunrise and psy-ambient to having trip-hop and Arabic influences. His style can convey a classical sound or something fresher and more bass driven. Rab is a multi-instrumentalist and even busts out some vocal chords himself from time to time, and works collaboratively with musicians of varied compositional backgrounds. This Cali born artist has played in heavy metal bands, jazz-fusion acts and even country bands previously, before becoming Random Rab. He also performs in a few other side projects both solo and alongside other performers as well. Rab can undoubtedly accredit his developed popularity in part to his legendary sunrise sets at Burning Man over the years, and you can check out a clip of him doing his thing in the Black Rock City through the link below.
Random Rab comes together with Birdseye in their track titled “Wake of the Storm”, a single released in late May of 2014. This song displays downtempo influences, laidback female and male vocals that delicately compliment one another, dub and psychedelic styles and an overall mellow feel. It has a lightness to it that is refreshing yet still promotes an incredibly powerful composition.
Rab is currently touring through North America and will be bringing the noise to the SOSMP during the weekend of May 8th through the 10th at this year’s annual PHB, and the excitement is very real to see his performance live. Tickets to the Purple Hatter’s Ball are still available for purchase on the event’s official site.
