Phil Lesh Comes to Brooklyn to Kick Off an Exclusive Year
In the midst of a Northeast run that includes multiple night stands at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY, the Best Buy Theater in Manhattan, and the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, PA, legendary Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh has announced a unique exclusivity deal with Peter Shapiro, a longtime patron of the jam scene. The deal will ensure that nearly every Phil Lesh performance of 2014 will take place at a Shapiro-run venue or festival, the exceptions being performances at Lesh’s own Northern California restaurant/performance space Terrapin Crossroads. In order to properly seal the deal, it seems Lesh will make his debut next Thursday at Brooklyn Bowl, which figures to host a good percentage of the musician’s gigs in the upcoming year. Though there has not yet been an official announcement, a New York Times article on the deal touts “a kickoff show in Williamsburg on Nov. 14.”
The announcement comes on the heels of the news that Furthur, one of the most successful post-Dead projects, will be on hiatus for 2014. Lesh has long been a road warrior, playing thousands of shows over the last four decades with the Dead and numerous side projects, most notably his constantly rotating Phil Lesh & Friends project. The deal will allow him to focus his energy on performance without worrying about the grind of excessive travel. In the New York Times article on the deal, Lesh stated, “I’m not retiring, and I’m not slowing down…I’m pretty sure I want to make music till I can’t breathe anymore. I just want to do it within the most focused possible way. The future looks really exciting.”
In addition to the anticipated Capitol Theater and Brooklyn Bowl gigs, Lesh has also been confirmed to play at the 2nd annual Lockn’ Festival in Virginia, another Shapiro venture. Shapiro got started in the scene when he was hand selected by the late Larry Bloch to take over the venerable New York City jam club Wetlands Preserve, and has been a notable promoter and proponent of improvisational rock music ever since.
The current lineup of Phil Lesh & Friends, which features Grahame Lesh, Anders Osborne, Luther Dickinson, Jason Crosby and Tony Leone, will be performing at the Best Buy Theater November 5-9, at the Tower Theater Nov 11-13, and at Brooklyn Bowl November 14.
