Queen Jane Approximately: In The Aftermath of SXSW
The tragic car accident which occurred in Austin at South by Southwest (SXSW) on March 13th, which left two people dead and 23 critically injured, has saddened our nation, especially the music community, and all of us at Sensible Reason. The drunk driver, who has since been charged with capital murder, was attempting to evade police when he barreled through the area where the festival was being held, taking down many pedestrians in his path. While legal justice is to be sought, there are many more pieces that remain, and everyone can help to pick them up again.
It is with heavy hearts that we say that one of the victims of this senseless act of violence is someone in the Sensible Reason family. HeadCount‘s Director of Artist Relations, the lively and talented Jane Henderson, was in a taxi leaving the show when driver Rashad Owens reached the festival area. Unfortunately, Jane was struck by the driver, and has sustained serious injuries, luckily however, she survived. We are beyond grateful that Jane’s condition is not life threatening, however it pains us to know that with a broken back, it will be a very long road to recovery.
The outpouring of love for Jane has been astounding to everyone who knows her. Friends of HeadCount have spoken out on Jane’s behalf, with bands like Conspirator asking friends and fans to contribute to Jane’s recovery fund. Bob Weir, guitarist from The Grateful Dead and RatDog, and HeadCount board of directors member, dead-icated the Dylan cover “Queen Jane Approximately” to our beloved Jane at their Knoxville, TN show on Friday night.
If you find it within your means, we humbly ask you to consider donating to Queen Jane’s cause. Jane is one of the most willful, energetic, and lively people in the world, but those qualities don’t pay medical bills. HeadCount has created an online fund, where supporters can donate any amount to aid in Jane’s recovery expenses. If you know Jane, then I don’t have to go any further in saying why she is incredible, and deserves the best care possible. If you don’t know Jane, then I will say this: Jane works tirelessly for HeadCount, helping young people across the nation reach their intellectual and political potential by becoming engaged with their community. Jane Henderson is one of those people that you meet and then remember forever. She will make you laugh until you cry, and then afterwards you will realize that you were being productive the whole time. She will take care of you, pay for your cab, shove a piece of pizza into your face when she knows that you need it before you know that you need it, or make a fool out of herself to cheer you up.
Even Jane’s message thanking everyone for their love and support was in the form of a hilariously crafted press release.
Words cannot express how thankful, and extremely touched, I am by the outpouring of support I have received during these past couple of days. Every one of your kind thoughts and funny messages brings peace to my body, and I know that they are helping to speed up this recovery! Between the ((vibes)) and prayers I am feeling so loved right now.
There are more than a few thank you’s that I need to make. To the people that were here, and continue to be here, to the hospital that has made me feel as comfortable as can be and to all of your for your thoughts.
I got my back brace this morning and will be leaving the hospital today ready to start my recovery.
Its gonna be about 8 weeks of rocking a pretty sweet turtle shell but with everyone’s support I can get back to a life filled with cross eyed photos, awkward dancing and inappropriate jokes.
Not that the jokes have stopped… my apologies to all the nurses I may have offended… or the emt’s face that I gently touched after he helped me out of the cab.
We’ve Got Jane’s Back, we hope you do too!
