Review: ORGONE at THE CUTTING ROOM
West Coast funk band Orgone played an intimate show at The Cutting Room in NYC on Friday, October 18th as a part of the CMJ Music Marathon, a platform dedicated to helping people discovering new music.
Sounds of horns and rhythmic goodness instantly filled the room as the crowd headed into the secluded stage area of the venue to watch Superhuman Happiness open the show around 10:30 p.m.
At first glance, the venue did not seem ideal for any concert. Upon entering there was a swanky bar set up with cocktail tables lining the floor, but the bar was completely separated from the stage area, so anytime someone wanted a drink they had to leave the music. The dance floor was narrow, although there was an upstairs area with extra tables and seating. After I obtained a cocktail and claimed a spot to dance, the venue grew on me because of how personal the vibe was.
Orgone took the stage around midnight. They began with eight members on the stage including Sergio Rios (guitar), Dan Hastie (keys), Tim Glum (bass), Sam Halterman (drums), Chuck Prada (percussion), Darren Cardoza (trombone), Devin Williams (trumpet) and Jodan Katz (trumpet).
As soon as the band started, the energy in the room went ballistic. Guitarist Sergio Rios and drummer Sam Halterman head banged dueling curly Afros along to the powerful dance rhythm their band provided. Percussionist Chuck Prada stole the show at moments with his intense conga fills as he played with his tongue out and eyes closed. Each band member played with much intensity and their energy was contagious.
By the third song, female vocalist Tiffany Austin took center stage in shiny gold leggings and addressed the crowd, “make some noise if you got some soul!” The crowd responded with an overwhelming roar, and with that the band went into the song Can’t Buy Soul. Austin’s vocals truly added a significant amount of heart to their performance.
Orgone brought their signature west coast funk until about 1:30 a.m. With moments of heavy rock, sexy slow jams and dance crazed sequences… Orgone’s performance at The Cutting Room raised personal expectations of live funk concerts in NYC.
