Road to Camp Bisco – Dennis Williams
The first time I heard the Disco Biscuits, I was with a good friend of mine, and he put them on for me. We have very similar tastes in music, but I just couldn’t get into them. Despite not initially “getting” the Biscuits, soon after I decided to go to my first festival: Camp Bisco X. There were many artists that I wanted to see (Bassnectar, Pretty Lights, Run DMT, Shpongle, The New Deal, etc.).
I drove with my buddy and his girlfriend to the festival grounds in Mariaville, NY, arriving at 2 AM. We slept and hung out until we were finally told we could proceed into the festival. We then waited in line until about 4PM. The time in line was miserable, and I thought I had made a horrible mistake going to Bisco. Fortunately, I had no idea what I was in store for that weekend. Once we were inside, we met up with our friends who were also attending.
When I arrived at Camp Bisco, I had twelve dollars to my name, but none of that mattered. Everyone was generous and willing to share whatever they had. The music was amazing. Getting to see Pretty Lights kill it late night to Shpongle Live with a full band while the sky opened up with thunder, lightning and wind, responding perfectly to what was going on on stage was unbeatable. The way the lightning went from cloud to cloud and the intensity of the rain ramping up during their set was breathtaking.
Being with my friend and his girlfriend who LOVE The Disco Biscuits, I followed them to a Biscuits set. What I proceeded to see and hear for that hour and a half blew my mind. I made sure to catch all of their remaining sets that weekend. I had the time of my life that weekend so much I went to Camp Bisco XI.
Bisco XI was just as fun as Bisco X was. When Camp Bisco XII came around, I had a new girlfriend who I convinced to go with me. Little did I know that she had attended Bisco X with her previous boyfriend who was trying to get in with my crowd, so she was no stranger. So when Camp Bisco X was in full effect, I ran into her and her boyfriend, we said hello and moved on, that was it. But right before Camp Bisco XI, she was on the verge of breaking up with him, but had tickets to go to Electric Forest with him. I tried to get her to attend Camp Bisco with me but she couldn’t, with it being right after Electric Forest. In a way seeing her at Camp Bisco X was kind of a sign that we would be together. But we did go to Camp Bisco 12 VIP, and had the time of our lives. I loved the fact that VIP tickets could be purchased in installments which made it more affordable. The VIP experience turned out to be amazing, from the showers to the food everyday and the event staff being there when you needed them. I really wish we could afford tickets this year, especially with this being my three year anniversary with my loving girlfriend.
It wasn’t until I was on my way to catch a Biscuits set with my girlfriend, when I saw a guy with long hair talking to a short tan woman. I did a double take because I soon realized who it was…Lorin Ashton (aka Bassnectar). He looked at me and held his fist out and fist bumped me before his set after the Biscuits. I then grabbed my girlfriend and spun her around. She thought maybe she was looking at Space Jesus, but quickly realized who it was. My girlfriend LOVES Bassnectar. The icing on the cake was that the woman talking to Lorin, turned out to be the female singer from Thievery Corporation whom my girlfriend also loves. They had played earlier that day in place of Animal Collective, who couldn’t make it to the festival. That is when I grabbed a photo of my girlfriend between the two of them.
That right there was an amazing moment. Camp Bisco XII had to be the best time I’ve ever had. I really want to attend Bisco 13, but financially we cannot afford to go. So hopefully next year I’ll have more money, but until then I’ll dream about that time I met Bassnectar at Bisco XII.
