‘Road to Camp Bisco’ – Tristan Thompson
I am a really big fan of the Disco Biscuits, but they don’t tour often so going to Camp Bisco is a great way to get a ton of Biscuits into three days as well as to see a lot of other music. The first year I went was 2010 and within the first 2 days I got my cooler stolen, my neighbors tent was broken into and ransacked and I think someone even stole my dirty Allgood shirt. Even after all of that my spirits could not be dampened, after all I was at Camp Bsico. So I went to the store to get beer (all of mine was stolen) and saw these two crunchy looking guys stealing from the Stewarts’ convenience store. After that, my friends and I went to a public lake the bikers told us about and went swimming for an hour to cool off and unwind before going back to the venue. One thing about the bikers is some of them are really nice and others are complete jerks. For example in 2011, I didn’t have my ticket when I got there and I asked one of them if it was sold out in line and they told me “Yeah, there are no more tickets” to screw with me. They did sell out that year, but not until after I got there.
As for the music, there was a tom of good music everywhere. I remember having a blast raging Big Gigantic during the day. It was sunny and my pants were falling off cause I was dancing my ass off, literally. The highlight for me though was seeing Thievery Corporation then Major Lazer then the Biscuits then to Bassnectar and back to the Biscuits. I didn’t leave the main stage the entire night, if I’m remembering the days correctly. Though I do know one night it was raining, I forget which it was, and we lost a bit of music. True to form the Bikers were driving around in a frenzy telling people a tornado was coming and to get to their cars. Later that night The New Deal killed a late night set, it was one of my happier memories of getting to see them. I have many good memories just meeting and talking to people. I was promoting for the Big Up that year and promoting is probably best way to shoot the shit with several hundred different people in a short period of time. I made some good friends with my neighbors, who I still talk to to this day. I just learned from that year to hide my cooler in my tent, and to fill up at least one bottle of water with half urine and half rum just in case anyone steals it again 😉
I’ve gone to Camp Bisco every year since 2010 as it’s always a blast, though last year had me saying I wouldn’t go back because the crowd was not the demographic I like spending my time with at festivals. There were too many young kids and too many bros for my taste. The lineup this year is such a good improvement though that I bought my ticket right away. I hope this will be the best Bisco I’ve gone to yet, nothing is better than getting to see the Biscuits, Umphrey’s McGee, STS9, and Lotus, all in one place. See you at ILCC!
