Russ Liquid Releases “Speedster” & We’re ‘In Love’
The first time Russ Liquid‘s sounds teased my ears was also the first time I saw him bewitch a full audience. It was at Electric Forest’s Observatory stage in 2013, and to this day I’ve never seen a producer move with such intensity and fervour between mixing and picking up the flute and trumpet simultaneously to loop and play live. Spellbound, I knew it would only be a matter of time before this extraordinary producer and musician would be playing a main stage. His hypnotic, genre-bending sounds give way to to vivid, psychedelic soundscapes steeped in electro-jazz and bass. These musical creations are so eccentric yet accessible that if you don’t listen out of auditory pleasure, you might just get caught up in following where the sound will move to next. Classically trained on the piano, trumpet, saxophone, and flute, Russ Liquid’s compositional approach to music is part of what sets him apart and inspires introspection, wonder, and musical curiosity.
2014 seems to be the year for Russ Liquid. In 2014, he’s collaborated with artists like Opuio on the reggae-inspired track “On Your Side,” and is currently on tour with Gramatik and has been playing on and off with him since the Age of Reason tour began (see tour dates below!). With Russ Liquid’s release of his multi-dimensional LP, Foreign Frequency, in early 2013 and EP, Promises, in late 2013, it’s exciting that he’s throwing even more beatscapes our way so soon.
With “Speedster,” Russ reveals a different side of his musical palette, but stays true to his characteristically unconventional style. It’s rare to hear Russ without his trumpet, and, while still in the realm of glitch-hop, this track draws on bass, disco, and 80s synths. The track is a teaser from his forthcoming album, In Love, dropping later this summer. What’s more is that In Love will be released on Gramatik’s ever-growing Lowtemp label. What we can expect from his new album is the unexpected, so prepare yourselves, and lend your ears to the track below:
