Santana and Allman Brothers Band at Jones Beach 7/24/12
As Santana said to the crowd at Jones Beach on July 24, “We need more of this music playing in our shopping malls, grocery stores, and elevators. This is what music is about, with a message, inspired by you.”
The renowned talent of the Allman Brothers Band does not need much explanation as it is exactly that, legendary. Attending one of their concerts, should be on everyone’s life list of experiences. Their shows are refreshing and eye opening.
This is the first time Santana and The ABB have co-headlined a summer tour. They started the East Coast in July as headliners for All Good Music Festival, and will be ending mid August as headliners again, for the Peach Festival.
Through out the tour both Santana and ABB, have been spicing up shows and paying tribute to other great artists of the 70’s and 80’s. Santana played some of his more popular songs at Jones Beach such as, Black Magic Woman, Maria Maria, Gypsy Queen, No One to Depend On, and Evil Ways. Almost all concert-goers that night were on their feet when he played, Oye Como Va, by Tito Puente.
The Allman Brothers played several covers at Jones Beach, beginning with their two opening songs, One Way Out by Elmore James and Stateboro Blues by Blind Willie McTell.
Other surprises throughout the show included an amazing ABB and Carlos Santana performance of Mountain Jam and Howling Wolf’s Smokestack Lightning.
Allman Brothers Band guitarist Derek Trucks, is not only the torch bearer of his hero Duane Allman, but has become one of the top ten best slide guitarists of all time. While ripping a jaw dropping solo during Midnight Rider at Jones Beach, he popped a guitar string off of his Cherry Gibson SG. Similarly, lead ABB guitarist Warren Haynes plays his guitar so hard that he cracks multiple guitar picks throughout concerts. A constant back up stash is clipped to his microphone for easy access. That’s just what its like to be that remarkable.
Trucks’ wife was another surprise to the show. Susan Tedeschi blew the crowd away when she appeared on stage and played Bob Dylan’s Don’t Think Twice, Its Alright. Known for her blues and soul music as well as her multiple Grammy Nominations, the crowd was more then pleased to have her perform.
It’s an incredible happening to watch such music ability in person, as well as see rock pioneers from the 70’s blow minds 40 years later.
