SBTRKT Hits Output August 1st
Aaron Jerome, the London-based producer and boundary-breaking-performer better known as SBTRKT (pronounced “subtract”), will be hitting the decks at Output on Thursday, August 1st, as part of the Williamsburg EDM hotspot’s new “Input” series. I’ll admit I was pretty disappointed to learn that this wouldn’t be one of his infamous live performances involving various instruments, live mixing, a tribal mask and vocals provided by musical partner-in-crime Sampha. Regardless, I have no doubts that his DJ set will be anything but its own groundbreaking, enlightening experience, given his dedication to creating multidimensional music and reaching new, uncharted heights, both with his sound and performance.
Jerome’s bio is difficult to write. This is because there is virtually no information regarding his personal life out there—and that’s the way he likes it. He prefers to let the music speak for itself and allow people to form their opinions of it separate from their knowledge of him as a person. He goes as far as to wear an elaborately decorated tribal mask at all performances to maintain anonymity. We’re guessing he’s not a big fan of the government lately.
A sound that was born in the underground electronic London club scene has taken on several layers over the years, evolving into a sort of indie, dubstep, bluesy, African, pop, electro mashup that is inexplicably just as appropriate for winding down in bed at night as it is fit for raging after-hours at a club. The wide range of styles SBTRKT toys with is evident in the eccentric roster of artists he has both remixed and collaborated with—most notably Radiohead, Little Dragon, and Modeselektor. He is best known for songs like “Wildfire,” “Hold On,” and “Right Thing To Do,” all of which feature a catchy underlying beat layered with deep, sultry vocals, meaningful lyrics and a bit of a tribal flare.
SBTRKT’s DJ sets are definitely out of the ordinary and not to be missed. Catch him doing his thing at Output in Brooklyn on Thursday, August 1st. Get your tickets here.
