Spotlight: “Not Alone” – Josh Jacobson ft. Skela
Josh Jacobson (formerly known as Treehaus) is a classically trained singer and multi-instrumentalist whose seasoned ears and production capabilities have earned him affiliation with the future-bass collective Moving Castle and features on premiere publications such as Earmilk. After touring for a month in California, including an appearance at Splash House, Josh is back to working on new material; that is, when he’s not DJ-ing dope private parties on the huge roof of his Bushwick apartment.
Josh continues to distinguish himself from the swath of trapped out future bass music that has proliferated in this scene. His recent single “Not Alone” features an exciting new collaboration with singer-songwriter Skela. The two have an undeniable chemistry and Skela’s smokey vocals give the track and evocative and atmospheric yet highly accessible vibe. Her incredibly catchy vocal hooks coincide perfectly with the deep pop-sensibility Josh is going for; ghostly synths reverberate and hover over resonant percussion in this deceptively simple composition. We can’t really tell if “Not Alone” sounds happy, melancholic, hopeful or victorious, and we’re A-OK with it. It’s clear the duo had a fully formed vision, and they nailed it. Listen below.
Stay tuned: in early 2016 Josh Jacobson will release a new EP of original material and go on tour. His live set, which features him on keyboard and vocals, is a must see that will convince you of the great talent that is emerging here.
