SR Track of the Day: Freelancer – Marshall McGee
One thing I didn’t expect to find during the Gramatik AMA on Reddit was the talented 18 year old Marshall McGee. Gramatik digs it, so I figured I’d check it out.
I’m glad I didn’t keep scrolling because McGee’s SoundCloud is packed with high-quality guitar-laden electronic music. The explosion of electro soul/funk/hip-hop can be felt all over the country, but none that I’ve heard is as promising as this. McGee embraces the genre while brewing up his own dynamic combination of bluesy guitar and funk-infused dubstep. And he just graduated from high school. If that’s not enough to get you excited, get this: that’s McGee’s own guitar and bass you’re hearing- and you can expect a live element at a Marshall McGee show. It’s like if Gramatik and Eric Mendelson were the same person. This kid is equipped with the instrumental and production skills necessary to make waves in this insanely popular segment of electronic culture.
With such strong instrumental proficiencies and robust sense of melody and songwriting at such a young age, I highly advise everyone to start following this perfect storm of innovation now. I don’t see how similar future funk artists such as Griz or The Floozies won’t notice this potential.
Brace yourself for “Freelancer,” a funky mixture of soulful guitar riffs, melodic bass licks and energetic drops. Also check out Marshall Mcgee’s recent EP Funkdefied and his fun remix of “Ignition” below. Free downloads everywhere.
