Summer Camp Music Festival 2014 Preview
The 14th annual Summer Camp Music Festival will return to the Three Sisters Park in Chillicothe, Il Memorial Day weekend, May 23-25. Umphreaks, Moe.rons and bass-heads alike will flock to the small town in the middle of Illinois for 5 sets of Moe and Umphrey’s Mcgee each, plus an eclectic roster of talented artists. With headliners like Zac Brown Band, Bassnectar, Primus and Trey Anastasio Band there will definitely be something for everyone. More big names include Gramatik, Yonder Mountain String Band, Lotus, Beats Antique, EOTO, Wolfgang Gartner, Keller Williams, Lettuce, Break Science, Mimosa, Figure, KOAN Sound, Bro Safari, UZ, Future Rock, The Werks, Dopapod and more. As always, there is a plethora of fantastic lesser known acts as well, 8 of which are highlighted here.
Tickets are on sale now for $192 with fees, and if you want to extend your summer camp experience and get there a day earlier you can pay an extra 30$ for a pre-party ticket on Thursday night- always a great time, plus you will get better camping spots since you get to the festival before the crowd on Friday. Once you have your GA ticket you can upgrade to VIP starting at $200 and RV passes are $150. The late night Red Barn shows will also be an extra $30 a night- keep an eye out for when these go on sale because they sell out notoriously fast.
Although the main headliners end at midnight every night, Summer Camp stays alive 24/7. If you miss the rush for the Red Barn tickets don’t worry, theres never a shortage of fun to be had at all hours of Summer Camp, more late night entertainment will include:
Late Night Campfire Jams : Taking place on the Campfire Stage, the Late Night Campfire Jams have become one of the best ways to celebrate into the wee hours of the night. Past performers of the Campfire Jams include: The Wood Brothers, Cornmeal, Split Lip Rayfield, Greensky Bluegrass, Hot Buttered Rum and more.
Late Night Vibe Tent : The Vibe Tent features different DJs and electronic style acts each night. Past performances have included: Paper Diamond, Boombox, Dopapod, Vibesquad, Orchard Lounge, Skrillex, and more.
Late Night at the Soulshine Tent : The Soulshine Tent, which during the day hosts a variety of live acoustic sets, discussion and workshops on social consciousness and awareness as well as many greening activities, turns into a late night tent featuring live music.
If you’ve never been to Summer Camp take note: you will NOT be camping by your car, you will park your car outside the campgrounds and then carry your supplies into the grounds and set up camp there. A lot of people bring some kind of wagon which is helpful in moving your stuff from your car to your camping spot. This will seem annoying at first, but in my opinion it makes the whole experience more magical. With no separation between the festival grounds and where you camp, there is an added sense of intimacy, and it really seems to bring out the best in people. Camping right near the stages also makes meeting up with your friends way easier and more convenient.
Make sure to also check the forecast and prepare for rain, last year Summer Camp turned into a mud bath on the 3rd night. But that didn’t stop the crowd from raging or Trey Anastasio and Zed’s Dead from playing through the pouring rain and thunder in some unforgettable performances.
