Sunday Funday: New Music From MC Chris, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, and Dolly Parton x Pentatonix
Welcome back to this installment of Sunday Funday! This week you’ll find a horror-themed album in the works along with a classic country song being revisited by its dazzling star with a sensational group.
With Halloween — excuse me, fall — descending on us rapidly, why not indulge in some fun, horror themed music? (No, not Elvira — at least not yet.) Inspired by an iconic figure, Freddy Kreuger, MC Chris is coming in hot with mc chris is dreaming. Leading the nerdcore album off is “sad sack,” which was inspired by his wife who wished the rapper sung more about sex in his songs. The multi-genre album will tackle personal issues the singer faces.
Dolly Parton recently teamed up with a cappella group Pentatonix to revisit an old classic, “Jolene”; the story driven song Parton wrote over forty years ago has new life as the five Texas-based members beatbox and perform witchcraft. While I’m not occasionally fond of a capella tracks, the pleas begging for the auburn haired woman to not steal their man is astounding.
I was quite surprised at how Sophie Ellis-Bextor managed to ditch her pop roots and opt to go for a different path, namely a folk path. As Wanderlust took my breath away, Familia was destined to be one that reinvigorated the dance vibes Ellis-Bextor produced as a pop star. The buoyant “Wild Forever” and disco-tinged “Come With Us” were upbeat reminders that pop has varying degrees. But to my chagrin, that is not what Sunday Funday will end on — instead, a solemn reminder of “Unrequited” love will take its place. Hauntingly beautiful, the British starlet reminds us that love is still beautiful even if your affections are not reciprocated.
