SunSquabi can’t be Stopped with “Pygmy Up” ft. Russ Liquid
Hailing from Boulder, CO, the tantalizing trio known as SunSquabi has been making some serious power strides recently, both in and out of the studio. Following the release of their wildly-successful Odyssey EP earlier this year, the All Good Records crew has teamed up with labelmate Russ Liquid in their newest release, “Pygmy Up”. This fresh follow-up to Odyssey is nothing short of what we’ve come to expect from the live-electronic band, and fits in precisely with their jazzy, funk-fueled disposition.
Full of funky, rich instrumentals including guitar, trumpet, sax and more, “Pygmy Up” showcases each of member of SunSquabi’s unique talents, and Russ’ various horn parts add extra robustness to the piece as a whole. Oldschool soul intersects with groovy glitches, giving this track its intensely unique character; it takes you on a smooth-sailing journey through sultry breakdowns, and its low-tempo bounciness is perfect for getting down Squab style.
Kevin Donohue (lead guitarist / producer) provided a quote that adds an extra layer of depth into the creative process behind this tune:
This track is a really good example of this vintage feel that we are experimenting with in the record. In addition to using an old school techniques to record the drums, the keyboards are all analog, including a hohner D6 and a 1960s organ. We played it out live a few times with Russ (Liquid), and his horn parts really added a new level of depth. When we asked him to record on it for the studio version, he went above and beyond at his studio in new orleans, adding sax, trumpet and trombone for a full russ liquid horn section. The result is a very big room sound on the track.
There isn’t any doubt that this “up-and-coming” group is well on their way out of that entry-level stage, so be sure to catch SunSquabi at one of their upcoming tour dates listed below (tickets here). Also, stay updated on all things Squabi via Facebook, Twitter, and Soundcloud.
