May 16th-18th, Dallas, TX held an event like no other — Comic Con. In its first ever year at the Dallas Convention Center, Sensible Reason was no doubt in for a crazy adventure. For three days, celebrities from TV shows and films, artists from all genres of graphic novels, as well as people from all walks of life in and out of state, gathered to geek it out and decorate the streets. If you thought rave outfits and kandi were out of this world — check out the attendees to this event: those kids ain’t got nothin’ on fangirls/boys with fabric, paint, and a hot glue gun.
The Dallas Comic Con 2014 Gallery are some shots we captured as we roamed the arena filled with the whackiest characters and the best kinds of people. Alongside the photos from the convention, we had the opportunity to sit down and speak with some of the best cosplayers during that weekend, who gave us insight into their creations. Only here at Sensible Reason, we bring you: Superhumans of Comic Con.
“So how long have you guys been cosplaying?” [in perfect unison] “Six years.”
“In five words, describe your experience with making this costume.” “It was all handmade.”
“It’s just something I’ve thrown together over the last couple of years. Bought a couple of pieces here and there. Getting a lot of people saying I look like the Green Arrow.” “So if you had to create a superhero name, what would it be?” “… Ahh, I dunno, I’m drawing a blank here.” “Guess we’re calling you: Drawing a Blank.”
“It’s bullshit made of hot glue and wishes.”
“The best picture was yesterday, I had like an eleven and a twelve year old with me in the photo. I was holding my light saber and I was doing the force push and this father had maybe a fifteen-month-old baby in his hands as he was taking the picture — and the little baby put out her hand! I turned over to the young boys and said, ‘ARE YOU SEEING THIS!?'”
“Can I take a selfie with you?” “Sure!” “How’re we gonna do this?” “I guess you just get as close to me as you can possibly can.”
“Dude, dude! Shut up for a minute and look over there, she’s taking a picture!”
“My daughter’s just gotten into this and she wanted to go to this thing, and she had an extra ticket and I tagged along.” “We’re really close to one another.”
“I’ve been to five or six cons…this is my main costume, but I have about two other ones.”
“How am I going to make the sword and how is my wig going to stay up?”
“Who’re you supposed to be?” “Fire Nation Katara from Avatar!” “I’ve never seen that show actually.” “Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!? You’re missing out.”
“I chose my Sylveon gijinka because I just fell in love with her. When I heard X and Y came out, that they were going to have a new Evie-lution and I always loved them. She was pink and cute and adorable – I was like, ‘Yep! That’s the one!'”
