Sweet Crude Adds A Bit of Cajun Flavor To New EP
It’s a good day when your inbox is filled with fantastic music. Sweet Crude is no exception, and their sweet blend of English and Cajun French is delectable. Their soon-to-be released EP, Critters builds up to their upcoming LP, Créatures (release date unknown). For right now, let’s focus our attention on tomorrow’s release. The album title could allude to how the selection of songs scatter around, causing your feet to dance up a storm. This seven piece ensemble truly embody the spirit and sound of Louisiana, and to reconnect with the past (Cajun French is dying language) is incredible and heartwarming.
“Isle Dans Le Mer” is eloquent; the pluckings are rich and drew me in to giving this EP a chance and I’m glad I did. The storytelling is rich and is divided into English and French and despite studying the foreign language for several years, my tongue has forgotten it. As for the lyrical tale, two are singing and giving their own perspective on a same situation. While the male voice somewhat despairs, the female voice is hopeful of what’s to come.
“La Cheminee” is hauntingly beautiful, opening with a solemn voice before the band adds their craftsmanship and hails forth to the dance floor. “Laissez Les Lazy” reminds me of a time when a friend ran a radio show and introduced me to cool bands, and it echoes happier times. I can’t help but feel passionate and swept up by the music. Lastly, I firmly believe “Mon Espirit” embodies the essence of the Pelican State. It sort of is reminiscent of zydeco music (which is also amazing). Critters, overall, is the result of a seven piece band looking to bridge a missing gap between familiarity and new territory.
