The Bowl Sessions with Kung Fu, Week 3
After the first Monday of the Bowl Sessions with Kung Fu, I was ecstatic to return to the Brooklyn Bowl to get in on another night of awesome music, great people and one of the best parties in town. Each week has been stacked with some of the best musicians, but this week was especially good. With Damn Right opening, Jon “The Barber” Gutwillig from The Disco Biscuits and Grammy winner Bill Evans sitting in it was sure to be a show to remember. You can always count on surprise guests, and this week both Adam Deitch from Lettuce and Break Science, and Nigel Hall graced the stage.
Kung Right! was this past Monday and let me tell you it was a rager. Joining Kung Fu, from Philadelphia, was the one and only Damn Right! I saw this trio for the first time back in March at Aura Music and Arts Festival. I was instantly hooked. Raging yet chill at the same time, Damn Right! brings some of the best dance tunes, with catchy melodies that you can’t help but move your feet. With Blake Mobley on Keys, Tommy Bradel on Drums and Jonny Fissinger on Bass, these guys are one of my favorite upcoming jamtronica bands. They started the night off with “The City” and played other fan favorites such as “High Tops” and “The Adventures Must Wait.”
This was only the start to one of my favorite Brooklyn Bowl shows thus far. To put the icing on the cake Jon “The Barber” Gutwillig of The Disco Biscuits came out and things really heated up. It has been the first time since Mayan Holidaze that Barber has played guitar on stage, but rest assured he killed it. It was great to see him back on stage having fun and absolutely shredding.
“Barber laid down some serious soul, like 1.0 status, making that Becker scream and sing all over the place.”- Jeff Kurtz
FUNK, FUNK, Jazz….oh wait and more FUNK! As if the party wasn’t already started, the bands slowly changed around Barber as they transitioned from one band to the other. I have never seen a set change with such high energy. Kung Fu brought out some of the jazzier and funkier guitar playing in Barber. Like all other Kung Fu shows, it was just impossible to stop dancing. I even got to catch some of my favorite songs of theirs such as “Stratus”, “Do the Right Thing”, “The Hammer” and ending the set off with “Bringing Up the Rear”.
Also sitting in with the band was Grammy winner Bill Evans. AND there were even surprise guests. Nigel Hall showed up on stage and played keys for a song, as well as Adam Deitch on drums. Monday night was really a treat, I’m still glowing and not sure if I’ll be back down from cloud 9…maybe just in time for next weeks show. I’m sure glad to see Kung Fu billed on so many festival lineups this summer. If you haven’t made it out to one of these, make sure to go to the final show at the Brooklyn Bowl next Monday!
