The Heavy Pets – Welcome Back to Colorado
The Heavy Pets, based out of Fort Lauderdale, FL, began their Spring Tour with an epic, high-energy 4-night run after a two year absence from Colorful Colorado. The Pets brought their distinct and passionate version of progressive funk music to Cervantes’ Otherside last Saturday and the energy from both the crowd and the band was pouring out the front door.
The Heavy Pets have a unique ability to turn what sounds like a simple groove, laid down by lead guitarists Mike Garulli and Jeff Lloyd, into an all out dance party driven home by the rhythm section. Jim Wuest on keys got into a spectacular solo during Help Me Help You, which was the turning point in the night from a great show to a nonstop, high-energy rager. Drummer Jaime Newitt not only showcased his ability to stay deeply in the pocket and kick out the jams on Girl You Make Me Stupid, but he was featured on an epic, solid beatbox solo.
Justin Carney, who has come a very long way as The Heavy Pets’ bass player, deserves the Most Valuable Player award for the night. The energy, excitement, and solid bass-line he brought to the stage are nothing compared to his outstanding talent and serious chops on the bass. Carney, featured on Holy Holy towards the end of the show, blew the crowd away and had us begging for more bass.
The Heavy Pets continue their spring tour in Florida, New England and all along the East Coast. You’ll also be able to catch them at some festivals this summer, Purple Hatter’s Ball in Florida and Wakarusa, to name a few. The Heavy Pets have returned with full force and they’re prepared to make you boogie.
