The Vibe Tribe Guide: Tee Tay’s List of Must-See Artists
“WELCOME TO THE TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF THE GATHERING OF THE VIBES!!”
I can just hear Wavy Gravy‘s booming voice echoing throughout Bridgeport already. We have made it through the cacophonous Independence Day fireworks and the magical Chi-town weekend that was the 50th Year Celebration of the Grateful Dead and soon we will all be “Truckin'” on down to Seaside Park for Gathering of the Vibes.
July 30th is just around the corner and I’m here to help prepare you for a successful, music-filled Gathering of the Vibes 2015. Brought to you for your planning pleasure:
The Vibe Tribe Music Guide | Tee Tay’s List of Must-See Artists
Thursday July 30th, 2015: Day 1 – Good Music, Good Friends and Good Vibes
Take Thursday off from work, pack the night before and caravan with your friends nice and early. Don’t forget your bikes, CamelBacks, watermelons and never ever forget a towel. Set your campsite up quick as the white rabbit and GO SEE MUSIC! (Perpetual Reminder: Music is what you came for. The rest of it is just the perks of Vibes.)
If you’re all set up and ready to go like a Vibes Champ, take a quick ride or stroll down the shore to the Green Vibes Stage and check out this Steely Dan/Umphrey’s McGee-sounding party band called Banooba! The name alone has to have at least sparked your interest. Trust and you will dance all weekend, guaranteed.
Banooba: Thursday / 1:30 PM / Green Vibes Stage
Pop over to the Main Stage for the Vermont band that fits right in with our kind – Strangefolk. Maybe grab a Jerry Roll on your way. Try the ferris wheel later.
Strangefolk: Thursday / 5:15 PM / Main Stage
Stick around Main Stage, indulge in epic people-watching, beer, food and shopping, and be sure to come prepared to make yourself comfortable in the sea of lawn chairs for an east coast band with the most – Max Creek.
Side Note: About the Sea of Lawn Chairs (Main Stage) – this is an unavoidable Vibes tradition (if you want to call it that) for some reason and people will set up their lawn chairs before they even set up their campsite. It always gets extremely packed and hard to navigate in and out of shows, especially at night. Remember to be respectful of others while trying to pass because we all attend Vibes for the same reason – to enjoy good music. It’s a good idea to choose a meeting point outside of the main crowd areas at both stages and communicate it to your crew so you can all boogie together. Just bring a trusty headlamp and be prepared to trip a lot on chairs and people. You get used to it.
Max Creek: Thursday / 7:05 PM / Main Stage
“This Connecticut improv rock band had been part of the family from the festival’s inception through 2003.” (Gathering of the Vibes Website) If that isn’t incentive enough to check out the 12-time returning champion of Vibes rock-and-roll, then I don’t know what is.
By this time, the evening has crept in and hopefully we don’t need to remind you of the need for hydration and warmer layers. Prepare you and your team to end the first night strong. Head back to Main Stage and settle in with the Grateful family. What would Vibes be without your essential Dead fix, especially in this, the year of the 50th Anniversary of the Grateful Dead.
Dark Star Orchestra feat. Melvin Seals: Thursday / 9:00 PM / Main Stage
“This band’s Thursday night tribute performances at Vibes have become one of the most talked about sets of the entire festival over the last six years.” (Gathering of the Vibes Website)
Thursday Late Night – YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS THIS
Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe: Friday / 1:05 AM / Late Night Stage
Karl Denson is a quintessential leader of the modern soul-funk movement and with his Tiny Universe, he’ll rule the world. Fight the urge to sleep for just a bit longer and give in to the funkiest man around. You can sleep when you’e done. (Perpetual Reminder: Music is what you came for. The rest of it is just the perks of Vibes.)
Friday July 31st, 2015: Day 2 – Could today even possibly get any better?
Twiddle: Friday / 11:00 AM / Main Stage
This feel-good Vermont band became known and loved for their smile-inducing bluegrass. They are now also known for their whimsical jams and great collection of original tunes. Twiddle is the perfect band to start your morning off with a jig. Grab a friend and a Bloody Mary and get on down and Twiddle a little.
This afternoon may be a good time to get on the giant ferris wheel with a few very close friends (literally, you have to sit very close). Get some pictures from the top and look around at the Vibin’ town below you. There are workshops, crafts, hooping, yoga and so many more activities to indulge in. Go get your feet wet. Soak it all in.
Tedeschi Trucks Band: Friday / 4:45 PM / Main Stage
This combination band of two incredible solo acts creates an extremely powerful voice and message. Susan and Derek Tedeschi will please your ears and ease your mind as we dance our way through Friday afternoon. Take a moment and remember – people are just about getting off work right now. Smile. Be grateful.
String Cheese Incident feat. David Grisman, Peter Rowan and friends: Friday / 9:00 PM / Main Stage
If you haven’t yet indulged in the bluegrass or the jam genres, now’s your chance to do both simultaneously. This Colorado-based band has been pickin’ and stompin’ all over our nation’s stages for almost 15 years and although these Rocky Mountain boys only seldom make appearances on the East Coast, I couldn’t be more excited that they chose Vibes to share with us this summer. This will be SCI’s first Gathering of the Vibes, so let’s be sure to give them a proper welcome and enjoy their grass for your ass.
Friday Late Night – YOU REALLY DON’T WANT TO MISS THIS
Electron: Friday / 1:05 AM / Late Night Stage
This epic combo band – Electron – includes some of my personal favorite artists from The Disco Biscuits, Lotus and Joe Russo’s Almost Dead. These talented and wild dudes create some of the most fun and new jamtronica tunes, just in time for late night.
NOTE: After this show, walk down to the opposite end of the boardwalk. There’s a Silent Disco set up on the beach, in case you feel the need to dance all night. There isn’t a better place to do it then in the sand at sunrise. (Perpetual Reminder: Music is what you came for. The rest of it is just the perks of Vibes.)
Saturday August 1st, 2015: Day 3 – Three days long, Still going strong!
Okay troopers. Are you ready for a challenge? Fill your water bottles, lather up the sunscreen and get ready for a long, full day of dancing.

Saturday Late Night – YOU REALLY REALLY DON’T WANT TO MISS THIS
(I may be the girl who cried “Late Night Wolf”, but just trust me!)
Lettuce: Saturday / 1:05 AM / Late Night Stage
For everything you knew about funk and hit the Late Night Stage with Lettuce. This Brooklyn-based, 7-member funky bunch also recently celebrated their 20th year anniversary, so let’s consider them the Funk Veterans. This group is original and outrageous and some of the most fun(k) you’ll have all weekend.
The Nth Power: Saturday / 3:45 AM / Late Night Stage Stage
Another of the sexy combo bands, The Nth Power is formed from members of Dumpstaphunk, Lettuce, Warren Haynes Band, Toubab Krewe and John Brown’s Body (just to name a few). Basically, this group has talent and Saturday late night, it will be spilling over onto the Bridgeport beaches well into sunrise.
Sunday August 2nd, 2015: Day 4 – Good vibes galore! Give us some more!
Most of even the strongest, most-committed Vibes fans don’t make it far into Sunday music, but if you do the weekend properly, you’ll be set to stroll over and plop down and enjoy the mellow Sunday Vibes with your family.
World Peace Flag Ceremony: Sunday / 11:40 AM / Main Stage
This is one of the longest running Gathering of the Vibes traditions – May Peace Prevail on Earth! It is a global celebration of oneness and a prayer for peace in all countries of all races and religions. It’s all about love. Give into it.
Earphunk: Sunday / 1:15 PM / Green Vibes Stage

Zappa Plays Zappa: Sunday / 1:45 PM / Main Stage
Cabinet: Sunday / 3:00 PM / Green Vibes Stage
I absolutely love this band whose roots are truly based in Appalachian tradition – Cabinet. Their harmonies tell stories and their songs build community. Their music is pure bliss. Just find out for yourself.

John Brown’s Body: Sunday / 4:45 PM / Green Vibes Stage
If you’re still standing, I applaud you. You’ve earned this last set, from Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals.
