Three Years Of Wonder: Looking Back On & Forward to Mysteryland!
We are finally only a month away from Mysteryland 2016 and there’s very little else that we can think about at this point. After weeks of warm up playlists, lineup announcements and stage teasing, we are finally reaching the home stretch. Mysteryland tickets are still available and you can grab yourself three day, two day and single day tickets here! With the phenomenal lineup of artists getting set to make their way to the hallowed site of Woodstock ’69, you will definitely want to find your way up to Bethel Woods from June 10-13.
Over the years Mysteryland has become New York’s favorite festival for a multitude of reasons. You can look to the consistently fantastic lineup, the amazing food or the incredible location, but most of all Mysteryland listens to it’s patrons, and that is why it has succeeded so well in the Empire State. For example, this year Mysteryland has opened the festival grounds to allow revelers aged 19+ to join the festivities, but has kept the Holy Ground a 21+ campgrounds which, in my opinion, is a great compromise. Allowing young blood to be pumped into the festival while keeping the age groups somewhat separated is a savvy move indeed. Furthermore, the change of date has allowed Mysteryland to expand to three days of music, which is something every festival goer was eager for. Finally Birdie Bucks have been abandoned, and while the electronic monetary system wasn’t a complete failure, it was a point of contention among veterans of 2014 and 2015.
All of this boils down to the fact the ML is listening and trying to get better. This was true in the leap from the festival’s first year to it’s second as well. Clever improvements were made to the campgrounds including necessary paved walkways to combat mud, extra showers and a more streamlined approach to the food court areas. Mysteryland is always trying to better itself and that is what is most important.
As we look forward at what’s to come in 2016, it’s important to remember the reason why we love this festival to begin with. Each year Mysteryland has done a great job of packing the former two days of magic with tons of key moments.
In the festival’s first year, Mysteryland stood out from the pack with a very heavy drum and bass lineup that many veterans will remember. The Boat stage was bass music launch pad in that inaugural year, with massive acts like Dirtyphonics, Delta Heavy, Sound Remedy, Let’s Be Friends and Figure all doing their part to give the nautical stage it’s infamous reputation. Electronic music icon Moby delivered a fascinating speech on the world of dance music, it’s origins and where it’s heading before taking the massive crowd at the main stage to church on the last night. My personal favorite moment came when legendary U.K. drum and bass collective Chase & Status absolutely blew the crowd a way with a scintillating performance at The Boat. Those aren’t the type of names you would usually see on a festival lineup in the States, but Mysteryland took big chances that paid off in it’s first year of American existence.
Last year the hits kept on coming. No one will forget the rousing performance of Netsky on the festival’s main stage or Kygo’s seductive set on the first night either. Funk phenom’s GRiZ and Gramatik teamed up for an epic block of bassy bliss that marked a significant moment in the evolution of The Boat stage. Doctor P left the crowd stunned with his masterful set which perfectly mirrored the work that Chase & Status provided only one year prior.
Through the years Mysteryland has evolved, and it isn’t resting on its laurels either. This year will easily be the festival’s biggest and boldest iteration yet. With an injection of hip-hop, the seismic additions of Bassnectar and Skrillex, along with the incorporation of taste-makers like Claude Vonstroke, Odesza, Gesaffelstein, Lee Burridge and John Digweed; Mysteryland has done an exceptional job of staying true to it’s identity while trying new and exciting things.
Mysteryalnd 2016 is going to be huge. There’s no way around it. You’re going to want to be there. Don’t allow FOMO to set in. Grab your tickets here and get ready for one more ride into the unknown!
