TOTD: Bassnectar – “Empathy”
After Friday’s tragic events, it’s safe to say we could all use a little positive boost of energy today. Help spark that start-of-the-week fire within you with some upbeat Empathy – today’s Track of the Day from the one and only Bassnectar.
Lorin Ashton (aka Bassnectar) has been rising to the top lately and continues to be one of the biggest names in electronic and dance music — his latest album Into The Sun making Billboard charts. He’s maintained his genuine character and humble charm since since day one, making him all the more inspiring to his fans and noticeably awesome in the eyes of the media.
Today’s track can be heard off Vava Voom, ‘Nectar’s 9th album release from back in 2012. Coming in strong with that heavy, uplifting bass that Lorin’s known to deliver, Empathy also puts out some catchy hip-hop verses and a chorus containing lyrics that seem to perfectly capture the essence of Basshead culture.
“To a higher zone, you are not alone. / I know no perimeters, frequency, no limiters. / We multiply integers. / We back and forth so limitless.
… Anything you feel / I can feel, too.”
Although these lyrics may seem vague without having one solid meaning, listeners can interpret the song as they wish and discover a creative significance that sits right with them. And that’s exactly the type of listening experience Ashton hopes for his fans to have through his music and live performances.
Bassnectar seems to have a different approach to music when compared to others in today’s crop of superstar DJ’s. His music obscures an artistic philosophy and musical aesthetic – traits that are are strikingly different from those around him. This particular song is no exception.
“My intention is to make an impact on culture and human kind because I’m authentically blown away by life and I’m in awe of the magic of every moment.” – Lorin Ashton (THUMP, April 2012)
The final verse of the track gives off an immersive, live performance vibe as the energy kicks up into the final drop – the lyrics yelling, “Hands high! Hands high!” as if you’re actually being commanded to do so while dancing in the crowd. If you love this song as much as I do, you’ll put your hands up regardless of your current location or situation at the time and proceed to get goosebumps. Some call it tacky, I call it the almighty power of music.
With that being said, turn up your bass volume and give Empathy a listen. It might win you over, it might not. Either way, it’s a fire track that’s worth a play for anyone seeking some heavier electronic beats for the day.
