TOTD: Elvira – “2 Big Pumpkins”
It’s not Halloween until I’ve had my fair share of Elvira, Mistress of the Dark grace every screen in the house. The way she approached horror films helped me overcome my hesitation to watch films I deemed scary, thus making every screening enjoyable and extremely campy. Many years later, I still enjoy sitting down to watch her films (Elvira, Mistress of the Dark and Elvira’s Haunted Hills) and relishing her appearances onscreen while making witty remarks about the situations happening around her.
As for this particular track of the day, “2 Big Pumpkins” is as camp as they come. Written by Fred Schneider of the B-52’s, Schneider captures the essence of Halloween personified as well as Elvira’s humor in under three minutes. Of course, what would fall be without pumpkins? And since we’re honoring the Mistress of the Dark, let’s make a song with a double entendre! Elvira is more than happy to “flaunt her two big pumpkins,” even going as far to mention they’re entirely real with no pesticides, which is a good thing because who wants their mouth full of chemicals? While you can order the song through digital retailers, I think none is more in tune with the Halloween spirit than by ordering the gruesomely purple vinyl with the cover art printed in heat-reactive ink, revealing the darkened silhouette’s true content.
Enjoy the song by yours cruelly!
