TOTD: Keegan Joyce – “Cooma”
I have very few celebrity crushes. While I could name a few, few are actually performers of the musical variety. I came across a particular show that dealt with mental illness in a mature way. I fell in love with the cast members, and as season two of Please Like Me progressed, I found a lot of myself in the way Keegan Joyce portrayed Arnold. It was like looking in a mirror; Arnold was this boy with crippling anxiety, and sometimes it felt a little too real. Watching him recoil after his boyfriend touching him, hearing him talk about how he scopes out bathrooms in case he has an attack, it felt like I was watching myself on TV. Granted, this is just a character Joyce plays, I couldn’t help but relate to this one character. It felt like a true portrayal of what it was like to have a disorder and not be the punchline of a poor joke.
As for the man behind the…man, Keegan is a very talented actor. He’s starred in musicals such as Once, as well as a role in the Doctor Who spin-off, K9. While I was debating on tracking down this original song by Joyce, I was torn between embedding this acoustic track and a cover of Sia’s “Chandelier,” the latter Joyce covered on Please Like Me. While Keegan was in the city of angels, he stopped by 1iota to premiere his original tune. Tweeting it was nerve wracking to share such a personal song, I’m glad there was enough confidence to release it. “Cooma” for those unaware, and because I Googled it so I knew what I was talking about, is based on the actor’s time spent in the Australian town with family.
