TOTD: Mikey Erg – “Boys & Girls & Tentative Decisions”
Memories of my youth come resurfacing once I listen to particular bands. You probably remember rocking out to Fall Out Boy, All-American Rejects, all those pop-punk bands that were killing it back then. Though my days of being rebellious against my parents, dressing in the coolest blackest clothing, and expressing my love for bands with their copious amounts of accessories are long over, it’s nice to relish in moments like the ones Mikey Erg provides. Though it’s been nearly a decade since The Ergs released their final album, Mike Yannich has taken to releasing his debut solo album this past June.
Our track of the day is taken from Erg’s album, Tentative Decisions, which in turn sum up the overall tone. “Boys & Girls & Tentative Decisions” is reminiscent of aging punk songs that speak of looming heartbreak. While Erg laments his love leaving him, he knows he’s at fault as well and openly speaks of his involvement (“I can’t lie to you but I can stretch the truth”). Somehow, Erg is able to find — and presumably seek — forgiveness in their lover’s departure. The hurt felt is relatable as Mikey Erg continues to angst out his feelings.
Not only is “Boys & Girls & Tentative Decisions” one of my favorites, the album is chock full of goodies like the angst pun-titled “Comme Si About Me” and “Faulty Metaphor.” Both righteous tunes to blare out your dusty boombox.
Tentative Decisions is available now via Don Giovanni Records.
