TOTD: MNEK – “Waiting For Tonight (Jennifer Lopez Refix)”
Just over a year ago, I stumbled across MNEK‘s take on Kylie Minogue‘s “Put Yourself In My Place” and fell in love with the British singer. He breathed new life into a favorite song of mine, and recently I found myself searching for more of this aspiring Brit’s music. Having been featured alongside great names such as Minogue’s, Rudimental, and Madonna, it’s no doubt that this 21 year old has talent with his debut EP being a highlight for many critics. While perusing MNEK’s SoundCloud on a whim, I found this amazing gem waiting for
MNEK has never made his songs simple; instead, he opts to craft something new and unique out of the old. Dusting off Jennifer Lopez‘s 1999 classic, “Waiting For Tonight,” the song is transformed into an electronic moment fit for a moonlight romance. The creative being that he is, MNEK introduces a little bit of Sweet Female Attitude by including the now-defunct UK garage duo’s song, “Flowers.” The added lyrics seem so sweet and heartfelt, adding on to the passion and dynamics felt in ‘Tonight.’ The electro-soul refix tings with fervorous romance due to the unlikely combination. Nevertheless, the overall result is dynamic, renewing my interest in the Londoner despite its release several years ago.
Y’know, I’ve heard “Waiting For Tonight” hundreds of times at my job, and I have yet to be tired of it. Hearing MNEK display his creations is always a welcome addition to my playlist, because let’s face it — I am a huge sucker for his creativity. Not only has he produced one of my favorite Kylie songs, his ingenuity should be felt across the industry and he’s on the rise to stardom with “Never Forget You.”
