TOTD: Natalie Imbruglia – “Friday I’m In Love”
There’s something about The Cure I’m starting to appreciate. Maybe it’s the way their songs can be interpreted? I’m a fan of covers, because music speaks to everyone on every level. Whether or not you’re a fan, your favorite artist covering a song can be both great and creative. Covers take on a life of their own and that’s the most important aspect of it. Now, as cliché as the title of this track of the day is, there is something spectacular about Natalie Imbruglia covering “Friday I’m In Love.” It speaks to me on so many levels, and not because I can throw a hoedown to it.
Imbruglia described it as the “most fun track on the album” and it is mostly true. The hootenanny that occurs is probably the most fun I’ve had in a while, and I’m not stranger to bluegrass or folk music, and coming into this cover was one of the best times I’ve had dancing around. The arrangement differs vastly from the original but it still remains true at heart, and I must say the banjitar is simply superb and I need it in every hoedown from now on. Male may consist of cool covers that seem to mold my perfect soundtrack, but it’s this song that takes it to another level.
