Track of the Day: “Dusty Stars” – TOKiMONSTA
TOKiMONSTA (Jennifer Lee) is an inventive musical force whose layered, textured beats have landed her among the ranks of heavy-hitters like Flying Lotus and Daedelus. Releasing albums on Ultra as well as Fly Lo’s Brainfeeder label, Jennifer Lee designs ear-catching experiences that straddle the many lines between jazzy glitch-hop soundscapes and indie pop/R&B goodness.
TOKiMONSTA’s classical music background and inspired fascination with hip-hop fuse together to create a range of outputs, from beastly beats to dreamy pop-inspired tracks to dirty house, and places between and beyond. With “Dusty Stars,” off her new LP Desiderium, we get something in between. Lee samples Aaliyah’s “Miss You” in a mix of fluttering time signatures, lofty vocals, and catchy hip-hop thumps. Here’s what the artist herself had to say about the track:
“Most of this album [Desiderium] was made during the day, while a lot of my past work had been made late, late at night. This is one of the tracks that was made pretty late at night and I think that quality is audible. I’m not sure how to explain this song because it built itself. I was alone in the dark for eight hours and crawled out the crypt with this track.” (Source: Red Bull Music Academy)
