Track of the Day: Little May “Hide”
Today’s Track of the Day is one that takes me to that place few songs can take me. One that makes my soul tickle, its resonance making me anxious for more. I can’t seem to get this one loud enough. The band is called Little May and today’s Track of the Day is their song “Hide.”
A trio out of Australia, Little May (Liz Drummond, Hannah Field, Annie Hamilton) creates voluptuous sound with their choir-style harmonies and folk-style guitar riffs. “Hide” showcases these talents well. The lyrics are from the perspective of a woman who catches the man she’s seeing with another, “dancing in the dark.” She thinks about how safe she feels in this man’s bed but wonders who he truly loves, declaring she won’t play his game of “hide and seek” while he sleeps with another woman. The song has only a few lines, but they reign over a full and heavy beat, driving the listener to feel the stab to the chest this woman must feel, her inevitable pings of anger, disgust, and self doubt. Starting off tame and slow, “Hide” builds to a climax that makes it hard not to sing and dance along. The song’s video flawlessly conveys exactly what I think of when I hear it. Check it out!
