Track of the Day: MNEK – “Put Yourself In My Place (Kylie Refix)”
MNEK has been gaining momentum for a while now, having been featured on Gorgon City’s latest album, Sirens, and producing and writing for the likes of Kylie Minogue, Duke Dumont, Gorgon City and a slew of others. A few years ago, the nineteen-year-old London native decided to take a favorite page of mine out of Kylie’s book, doing a refix on one of her songs under the Deconstruction Records label.
“Put Yourself In My Place” is an all-time favorite song of mine, and MNEK paid Minogue a lovely tribute, re-imagining it as something Sam Smith might record. The original version is a slow paced trip-hop song with spacey elements, but MNEK did great justice to the 1994 song, reinventing his cover as more of a pop song while retaining that special space element. Included in the Londoner’s take are pitched snippets from the original that contrast with MNEK’s deep vocals as he croons over unrequited love.
While we patiently await the young singer’s debut album, it’s fun to take a look back at what he’s done for others as well as what he’s accomplished himself.
