Track of the Day: “Music of the Spheres” – Passiflora
Passiflora’s sound is as uplifting and evocative as the flower after which they are named. Mariana Echeverria, Christine Raine, Tanya Raine, Martha Palacio, Manuel More Fairén, Joel Fernandéz, and Héctor Morales have cornered the Costa Rican gypsy folk scene. Founded in 2011, Passiflora has released two albums, Noches en Vela (2012) as well as Passiflora en Vivo: Noches en Vela (2013), which featured six new songs.
I had never heard of Passiflora before the Envision Festival 2015 initial lineup announcement was released (most likely because they are based in San Jose, Costa Rica), yet I have a feeling they are going to become a fast favorite. While acquainting myself with their repertoire, I stumbled upon “Music Of Spheres,” and instantly fell in love with the lyrics. An invitation to revisit past hurts and disappointments, insecurities and regrets, it also asks us to explore opportunities for autonomy and self-empowerment, to take a step out of the chaos and find the underlying melody beneath it all – we must learn to love ourselves first.
Passiflora will be gracing us with their presence this February on the beaches of Uvita, Costa Rica. They are but one of the many precious gifts of intercultural exchange to be shared at Envision Festival 2015.
