Umphrey’s McGee Will Bring The Heat To Kalamazoo [1/30/16]
Fresh off a stellar New Year’s run in Denver, Umphrey’s McGee is ready to continue their progressive-rock sound in 2016. They will be bringing the heat to the Midwest in Kalamazoo, Michigan at the Wings Event Center on Saturday, January 30. They made sure to invite some of their best musical friends: TAUK to open up the show and saxophonist Joshua Redman to accompany Umphrey’s as a guest sit-in. In what will inevitably be a great night, January 30 is already circled on many fans’ calendars as a must-see show.
Starting off the night with TAUK is a tremendous way to kick things off. A rising band in the jam scene, they will not disappoint. Besides some of the covers they play, which include Nirvana’s “In Bloom” and The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby,” they play plenty of originals that can get an entire crowd moving. Besides quality musicianship, these four guys from New York absolutely exude confidence on stage. TAUK has collaborated with Umphrey’s plenty of times as well, so nobody would be surprised if there were some members of UM that join TAUK for a tune or two. This is definitely one of those opening bands that you don’t want to miss.
Clearly the act of the night is Umphrey’s McGee. As if the band name doesn’t speak for itself, they are bringing an old friend along, Joshua Redman. The saxophonist has added plenty of superlative musical exploration to Umphrey’s history. If you don’t — or can’t — remember, just look back to an amazing NYE run in 2008 in Chicago. Or Denver in 2013. Or perhaps just as recently as last March. The guy can join Umphrey’s on stage and almost transform himself into a dominant and integral part of the prog-rock band. This saxophonist can not only play the horn but add an intricate layer to the progressive rock improvisation of Umphrey’s McGee. Not that Umphrey’s needs another musician, but they will certainly welcome it. And so will the crowd. It will be a great night in Kalamazoo that you won’t want to miss. With the opener TAUK and the guest visit from Joshua Redman, surprises could very well pop up throughout the night. Regardless, everyone is guaranteed a great night of entertainment from Umphrey’s McGee.
