Vagabond Specter Intrigue With New Single “Half A Billion Miles”
Lately we’ve been hearing some really intruiging alternative rock coming from across the pond. The latest band to catch our attention is one of the Ukraine’s most buzzed about acts, Vagabond Specter. Based in Kiev, Ukraine and initially a studio project, Vagabond Specter is the joint brainchild of vocalist Pablo Specter & guitarist, keyboard player and producer Yuriy Smalius, who met in Kiev in 2014. At the time, Pablo only had skeletons of songs that would later bloom into the group’s debut album, MIRRORS, until Yuriy stepped in and helped him bring his nascent vision to life. After a year of hard work, the duo recruited bassist Egor Gavrilenko & drummer Alex Okremov to help add the finishing touches on their live performance which they then took on the road.
Since then the band have remained busy over the last year, ammasing a myriad of show dates throughout their native Ukraine. The band has been pushing forward non stop with projects like their “Secret tour” – a 25 date run through different Ukrainian towns, slots on Atlas Festival and Faine Misto Festival, and scoring support slots with Bloom Twins & Pianoboy. The band will be rounding out the year supporting legendary US altpop outfit Garbage in Kiev on November 13th.
Vagabond Specter have a nearly indie appeal that really speaks to me. Drawing inspiration from the likes of The Black Keys, Muse, The Killers, The National and Death Cab For Cutie among others, MIRRORS mixes Pablo’s easy vocals atop a cushy bed of quirky electronic elements, driving rhythms and effortlessly shifting guitar play. Tracks like lead singles “Half A Billion Miles” and “She’s A Bird” meld hints of Frusciante-esque guitar layering with sumptuous melodies, coalesced by driving percussion. Half A Billion Miles” is definitely a fan favorite and Pablo’s vocals definitely remind me of Cage The Elephant’s wispy vibe.
