Waiting for Summer Set Music and Camping Festival
The other day, I had a conversation with a friend about music festivals. She stopped me for a second and pointed out that I spoke about each festival in terms of both name and year. “Why mention which year it was, isn’t it the same festival?” she asked. It had been second nature for me to differentiate between each year, but the question forced me to pick my brain as to why. Of course, it didn’t take long for me to confidently state: “They’re completely different experiences!” One experience I’m extremely excited to be a part of again this year is Summer Set Music and Camping Festival.
Two years ago, a family friend gave me a ’95 Saturn Wagon. My first road trip with it? Summer Set. My new roommate and my old car went on the ultimate adventure to the first Summer Set Music and Camping Festival. Attendance was low, the acts were huge, and we slept in the car. Both of us met lasting friends, and we never had to leave the state. A rainy festival, Summer Set’s first year was muddy, but the surrounding area was so gorgeous that most festival attendees were forced to explore their surroundings.
Summer Set’s sophomore year was bigger all around. The acts were bigger; the campsites were bigger; the attendance skyrocketed, and everyone left happy. Fun Fact: It was my first assignment here with Sensible Reason. The ’95 Wagon had exhausted her last mile, but living in Minneapolis, I was able to catch a ride to the festivities. More friends of mine attended the festival, and even though the campground was massive, it was hard not to run into someone more than once. Security was tighter, but the weather definitely was forgiving.
With blind pre-sale tickets already sold out, the third year of Summer Set is bound to be the biggest yet. Only three years old, the festival has made a national name for itself as a festival to attend. While mainly an EDM festival, Summer Set does an amazing job of highlighting some of the area’s rising local acts, regardless of genre. As if that wasn’t enough, both years some of hip-hop’s greatest artists, like Common, Big Boi, and Black Star, have also headlined Summer Set.
It’s all going down August 15, 16, and 17th in Somerset, WI. So far, only this year’s dates have been announced. But in the meantime, keep an eye on Summer Set’s website for lineup announcements and more, and check out last year’s recap below.
