What Exactly Goes On at Wanderlust Yoga Festival? (Part 1)
The Wanderlust Festival takes place in Colorado and is one of America’s largest yoga festivals. You’ve likely seen these flyers laying around your own yoga studio or some hip vegan restaurant; if you too are a festi-yogi, it might have peaked your interest. The investment to attend is reasonable, but I can always just do yoga at home for free, right? So why does this festival attract thousands from all over the country?
Wanderlust Yoga Festival began in Squaw Valley, California in 2009 and has since expanded to a 9-city, 2-country brand that brings together music-loving yogis in the most scenic places in the world. In addition to the inaugural Squaw Valley location Wanderlust festivals will be held this year in:
Aspen-Snowmass, Colorado (July 3-6)
Stratton, Vermont (June 19-22)
Whistler, British Columbia (July 31-August 4)
Tremblant, Quebec (August 21-24)
Other than yoga, the festival also includes meditation, classes on nutrition & permaculture, and yoga-teacher-training. What I didn’t expect were things like pool parties, nature walks, or that Jurassic 5 would play at a yoga festival. Also in attendance are Tycho, who seems to be killing it this year (see our recent article about his sold out shows in Austin), and a man who seems to have found his niche: MC Yogi. Of course there will be an unbelievable number of teachers, speakers, and demonstrators attending as well.
This all looks good on paper, but what’s the vibe of the festival? What goes on at night after the music stops? What happens in the campgrounds? These are all questions I’m going to try to answer in the culmination of figuring out the answer to the question: What exactly goes on at a yoga festival?
